Doh! Sorry, yeah, the game is really built for a mouse click+drag system and even with that, it can be quite difficult. Cheers for trying though, and I'll think about expanding for controller schemes in future games, or just altering the difficulty to compensate! If it helps, you might be able to make it through by ignoring the star system as you can't lose by having patients wait long, so just have some constantly wait so you just cure one at a time, perhaps.
